12 WEEKS PREGNANT

I’m happy to share I’ve made it to 12 weeks pregnant! As I shared in my original post, pregnancy after molar pregnancy can cause anxiety, and fear. Nevertheless, I’m choosing hope.

Our Third Ultrasound

Due to discovering 2 previous miscarriages at our 12 week appointments, my husband was understandably anxious about this one. Despite our history, my 12 weeks pregnant ultrasound went very well!

Nuchal Translucency Scan

I just had my Nuchal translucency scan (NT Scan) at 12 weeks pregnant. This screening test is an ultrasound that’s usually combined with a blood test. As a result, it will assess your baby’s risk of having down syndrome and other abnormalities.

Firstly, the stenographer measures the space in the tissue at the back of the baby’s neck. Babies with abnormalities tend to accumulate more fluid here, making this space appear larger than normal during the ultrasound.

Secondly, bloodwork is done. For instance, I chose the Harmony prenatal test (NIPT) with gender identification.

In case you’re wondering, the Harmony prenatal test screens for the most common chromosomal conditions including:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 and trisomy 13
  • 22q11.2 microdeletion
  • Monosomy X
  • Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCA)

Finally, the NT Scan results are calculated using the measurements from the ultrasound, your age, and findings from your blood test. However, the results take at least 7 business days to receive.

WEEKLY TEST RESULTS

My previous thyroid test showed hyperthyroidism, but my OBGYN said that can happen in the first trimester. As a result, she ordered follow up thyroid screening at 12 weeks pregnant to check if it would correct itself, and it did. Although I’m currently slightly anemic, my thyroid tests came back normal. Praise the Lord!

OBGYN Feedback:

Due to my last pregnancy being a partial molar pregnancy, I had 2 back to back D&C’s after I miscarried at 12 weeks pregnant. So, my OBGYN is concerned that my cervix may be too thin. In other words, my cervix may not hold this pregnancy.

Consequently, starting at 15 weeks, I will have weekly ultrasounds to measure my cervix. If my cervix begins to shorten, she will schedule a cervical cerclage. Most importantly, I will be put on strict bed rest for the rest of my pregnancy.

In short, a cervical cerclage, also known as a cervical stitch, is a treatment for cervical weakness. For instance, if the cervix starts to shorten and open too early during a pregnancy, it can cause a late miscarriage or preterm birth. Therefore, the stitch will help to prevent that.
