Life Cycle of a Butterfly

All butterflies have “complete metamorphosis.” To grow into an adult, they go through 4 stages: Eggs, Larva, Pupa, and Adult. Each stage has a different goal. For instance, caterpillars need to eat a lot, and adults need to reproduce.

Fun fact: Depending on the type of butterfly, the life cycle of a butterfly may take anywhere from one month to a whole year.

Butterfly Eggs Alphabet Matching Activity

This activity is wonderful for letter recognition, reading preparation, and fine motor skills.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 1 Sheet of Green Construction Paper
  • Circle Dot Labels
  • Pair of Scissors
  • Black Marker
  • Green Marker

Instructions:

1.) First, cut a large green leaf from construction paper. Then use a green marker to draw veins onto the leaf. Use a black marker to draw 26 circles onto the leaf.

2.) Next, write each of the uppercase alphabet letters inside the black circles.

3.) Finally, use 2 sheets of the off-white circle dot labels. Write each lowercase alphabet letter onto a sticker. You can also cut the dot stickers into strips for easier use.

The Maternal Hobbyist Tip: For an added challenge, ask your child to sound out the beginning letter sounds for each letter as they go. This is a great beginning reading skill!

WHAT YOU NEED:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.) First, grab pages 5 and 6 from the free printable above.

2.) Then place the Safari Ltd. figurines and the magnifying glass near the life cycle page.

3.)Begin talking to your child about the four major stages in the butterfly life cycle from page 6.

5.) Finally, the best part is to allow your child to learn through play!
